What to Do When You Move: How to Plan a Move

Are you planning a move?

Moving can be a stressful time, mainly if you are not prepared. Thankfully, it’s not that difficult to be prepared once you get the correct guidance.

If you’d like a step-by-step guide to get things done, then the following tips will give you some direction on what to do when you move!

1. Get and Stay Organized

Create a checklist of all the tasks you need to do for the move. This checklist will help with time management and keep you organized. A detailed six-week timeline will help you to stay on track.

Personalize your checklist, add dates to it, and assign responsibilities so that you know what needs to be accomplished, when, and by whom.

2. Prepare a Budget

As you begin plans for your move, it is vital to establish a moving budget. Whether you hire a moving company or are planning a do-it-yourself move, having a budget to set limits will help you in the long run.

If you plan to hire movers, factor into the budget: the moving company fee; additional insurance; extra service charges for things like moving a piano; extra costs for things like long-haul service charges; and professional packing.

If you are planning to move yourself, include truck rental fee; fuel cost; extra equipment rental for items such as dollies and moving blankets.

3. Gather Supplies

Your move will require lots of supplies for packing. Head to your local hardware store or moving supply shop.

Pick up plenty of packing tape, masking tape for marking things, markers, scissors, packing paper,  bubble wrap, and boxes.

You will need a lot of boxes. You may purchase new boxes and also get some sturdy, gently-used boxes from online resources like Craigslist or the neighborhood website, Nextdoor. If you know someone who works in retail, ask them to set aside their sturdy, used boxes for you.

4. Change Your Information

Another critical task is to change your address. Fill out the post office’s online form and register your change of address with them. You will need a credit card with your current address to verify the request.

You should also transfer your utilities to your new address. Try not to do this at the last minute since many companies take some time to process the request. You don’t want to move in and not have the utilities you need to make your life comfortable.

Final Thoughts

Moving can be stressful, and knowing what to do when you move is essential for your peace of mind.

Plan with a checklist in place. You also need to make the right choices so you can get packed and moved to your location with minimum hassle.
