Interstate Moving

Interstate (state to state) moves are usually charged based on the weight of your shipment, plus any additional services you request. The only way to know your actual moving cost is to have an estimator visit your home or apartment. They will perform a full survey of the items to be moved, discuss any other services you may require, and provide you with a detailed written cost estimate. Internet quotes are too inaccurate.

When choosing a long-distance mover, be sure to check their credentials. Do they have a local office? How long have they been in business? Are they licensed with the FMCSA to perform household goods moving? Remember that no moving company should require a deposit to secure your move date.

With headquarters in both St. Paul and Rochester, Metcalf’s team of long distance movers is uniquely positioned to relocate you and your family from the Twin Cities and Rochester to just about anywhere in the country. Our most common interstate moves originate in Minneapolis, and with thousands of cross-country moves under our belt, there’s no better team to guide you on your journey. Whether you’re relocating across Minnesota or across the nation, trust the long distance movers at Metcalf Moving & Storage to provide a hassle-free move.

Long Distance Move FAQs

Long-distance moves typically cost between $3,000-$8,000 for legitimate moving companies, though larger moves can cost $10,000 or more. Costs are primarily based on the weight of your shipment and distance traveled. For moves between Minnesota and nearby states like Wisconsin, Iowa, or the Dakotas, costs typically fall on the lower end of that range. Budget alternatives like rental trucks ($700-$2,000) or moving containers ($2,000-$5,000) cost less but require more work on your end.

Interstate moves are priced based on the weight of your belongings (measured in pounds) and the distance to your destination. Additional factors include packing services, extra stops, and peak season surcharges.

If possible, book at least 4-8 weeks in advance for long-distance moves. During summer (peak season), book earlier to secure your preferred dates. This allows time for an accurate in-home estimate, planning, and coordination.

A moving company owns trucks and employs the crew that moves your belongings. A broker arranges your move by connecting you with actual moving companies but doesn’t perform the move themselves. Always verify who will actually handle your belongings. Most complaints and horror stories about moving are from people who used a broker rather than a true moving company.

Interstate movers must have a USDOT number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Check their number on the FMCSA website. They should also be members of the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). Verify insurance and read reviews carefully. Many companies who pose online as movers are actually brokers.

Interstate movers must provide you with the ‘Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move’ booklet and the FMCSA’s ‘Ready to Move’ brochure. You’ll also receive a detailed estimate, bill of lading (your contract), and inventory list.

Delivery times vary by distance and logistics. Moves from Minnesota to neighboring states like Wisconsin, Iowa, or the Dakotas could delvier within a day. Cross-country relocations to the coasts could take 4-14 days, but these dates can vary depending on your actual destination and the size of your move. Ask your mover for a guaranteed delivery window in writing.

You’re not required to pay more than 100% of a binding estimate or 110% of a non-binding estimate at delivery. Any additional charges must be billed within 30 days. If a mover demands excessive payment, this may be fraud—contact FMCSA immediately.

All interstate movers must offer basic coverage (released value) at $0.60 per pound per article. This is minimal protection. Full value protection is available for purchase and covers repair, replacement, or cash settlement.

Pianos, antiques, fine art, safes, hot tubs, and other specialty items may incur additional charges. Stairs beyond the first flight, long carries (over 75 feet from truck to door), and elevator usage may also cost extra. Discuss these during your estimate.

Yes, be present when movers inventory your items at both origin and destination. Review the inventory list carefully and note any pre-existing damage. This protects both you and the movers from false claims. If you are unable to be present for your move, talk to your mover. You can consider having a friend or relative present to act on your behalf.

File a claim with your moving company immediately. Take photos of damage and keep all documentation. Interstate movers have a formal claims process. You typically have nine months from delivery to file a claim. Your insurance coverage determines compensation.

Yes, most long-distance movers offer storage solutions for items that can’t immediately go to your new home. This is helpful if your closing is delayed or you’re downsizing. If you store your things with your mover, they will also deliver them out of storage to your new home. If you use a mini-storage, you will need to arrange to move items again.
