The following tips will help ensure your next move is seamless.
Must-Know Moving Organization Tips: 6 Tricks for an Easy and Stress-free Move
Organizing a move requires plenty of prep time. In the long run, planning and preparing early, will save you time and stress on the day of the move. There are many ways you can make moving easier for yourself and movers, with some of the most helpful advice below.
1. Get Good Boxes
Sturdy boxes make all the difference and are well worth the investment. The durable materials help ensure the safety of even your heaviest belongings. Sometimes reused boxes from the grocery store or nearby retailer are adequate, but other times you will find new boxes are most appropriate.
Heavy duty boxes are available for purchase at home improvement stores. Another option is to check with the moving company you plan to use. They often provide boxes as part of their services or sell higher quality ones for you to purchase.
2. Label Boxes by Room/Zone
When you begin packing, make sure you are labeling everything. In addition to writing what is inside the box, including where the box belongs – for example, “kitchen glassware.” This lets you know what’s inside, and where the box should go at your new residence.
Remember to label every side of the box for easy identification.
Labeling also helps to keep items together. This makes it easier for you and movers when loading the truck.
3. Declutter (Before and After)
Practice the three R’s before you begin packing:
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
Reduce unwanted items by donating them to a charity. Reuse items like shoe boxes or travel bags. And, recycle things you don’t intend to donate.
Repeat this process once more when you arrive, as there is a chance you may find even more to get rid of once in your new place. This process frees up more room for you to enjoy and plan your new layout.
4. Organize the “Un-packable”
There are many items you’ll want to set aside from others, such as:
- Cleaning supplies
- Paints
- Insecticides
- Propane
- Gas tanks
These items can create dangerous fumes in an enclosed space like a moving truck. Instead, keep them organized and put to the side while you pack everything else.
When it is time to move, transport them in the back of an open truck. Or, ask your movers about a safer way to transport them.
5. Pack an “On-Hand” Box
Your “on-hand” box should include items you will not only need on a day to day basis but also items that may be valuable, such as:
- Medications
- Personal documents
- Jewelry and accessories
- Personal media
Make sure you know where this box is during the entire moving process to ensure you don’t accidentally lose or misplace these important items.
6. Make it a Team Effort
If you have help with your move, give each person a specific job. You can even turn the packing process into a game or contest.
For example:
- Offer a favorite take-out once boxes are packed
- Work together in a single area while playing music
- Talk about the memories as items are placed in boxes
When you do this, you may even be able to add a bit of “fun” to the moving process, which will make everything easier.
