Here’s Why You Should Explore Minnehaha Falls

Minneapolis is rated as the best city park system in the USA and is easily accessible from anywhere in the Twin Cities. It’s a convenient place for all Minnesota residents to catch up on some much-needed relaxation during their downtime.

That’s just one of the reasons to visit Minnehaha Falls, though. This beautiful attraction offers plenty of things to do for both residents and visitors to Minneapolis.

Things to Do in Minnehaha Falls, MN

At 53 feet, Minnehaha Falls isn’t the tallest or most dramatic of the USA waterfalls. It is one of the most beautiful, though. It’s also easily accessible and a favorite photography spot for nature lovers.

The park abounds with river views, limestone bluffs, and groves of elm, basswood, oak, and cottonwood trees. You’ll also find brilliant displays of native woodland and prairie wildflowers when you roam these beautiful landscapes.

These assets make it one of the area’s most visited attractions, drawing over 850,000 visitors a year.

Take a walk into the gorge below the falls for the best views or enjoy the sights from one of the shaded benches overlooking the Falls.

Picnicking is a top weekend activity at Minnehaha Falls, while the more energetic can take a stroll to the confluence of Minnehaha Creek and the Mississippi River. Here you’ll find a beautiful beach perfect for sunbathing or fishing.

There’s also a disc golf course onsite and a wading pool for kids.

Planning Your Trip

You’ll find this 193-acre park at the intersection of Minnehaha Parkway and Hiawatha Avenue, Minneapolis. If you’re new to town, you can get Minnehaha Falls directions and a Minnehaha Falls Map from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

Any time of year is an excellent time to visit the Falls. Summer is best for picnicking, and the waterfall looks spectacular when it freezes over in winter. It’s open year-round from 6 am to 10 pm.

The park also hosts the annual Minnehaha Falls Art Fair.

Restaurants Near Minnehaha Falls

The onsite Sea Salt Restaurant dishes up delicious seafood to fuel your adventures, and you’ll find several other eateries nearby.

You will find several restaurants within a few blocks of the park, such as the quaint Sassy Spoon.  They offer a wide range of specialized foods catering to vegans and vegetarians. You will also find all the usual fast-food outlets near the falls if you prefer to grab a bite to eat before arriving.
