Which Essentials to Take with You During a Long-Distance Move

Long-distance moves are much more complex than moving within the same city or state. Because you’ll be on the road for at least a few nights, you need to have essential items ready to go. Also, your professional movers may arrive at your new home a day or two after you, depending on the situation.

But, which items are essential and which ones can arrive later? While everyone’s situation is unique, here are our top picks for critical things to bring on a long-distance move.

Toiletries and Medications

First, include essential toiletries like a toothbrush, floss, deodorant, makeup, hair products, and medications. Even though you’ll go from one bathroom to the next until you arrive, you still have to maintain your hygiene. You might also want to adjust your routine since you’ll be on the road for a little while. For example, if it takes an hour to get ready for work, you can likely skip makeup and hair routines. So, perhaps a hair dryer and makeup kit can get packed away for the journey.

Also, keep in mind whether you’ll need toiletries when you arrive at your new home. You must supply everything from toilet paper to hand towels to bath towels, so don’t forget and leave yourself hanging. Even if the moving truck is scheduled to arrive shortly, you should have the basics with you, just in case.

Change of Clothes

Spending multiple nights in hotels means you’ll have to change clothes during and after your trip. However, what about when you arrive at your new house? Will you need to do laundry? If so, do you have laundry soap and a hamper? If these items get packed away on your moving truck, you might have to dig around for them later, creating more hassle for yourself.

Also, consider extra clothing like jackets, boots, hats, and other accessories. Depending on the weather, you might have to wear various clothing on your way to your destination.

Computer/Tablet

These days, more people are working from home than ever before. However, tablets and computers are also helpful as entertainment tools to help keep little ones engaged during the trip. Don’t forget about peripheral items like chargers, plugs, and mice when packing your computer or tablet. If you plan to work while you’re on the road, it may be a good idea to invest in a lap desk, just in case your hotel rooms don’t have a desk from which to work.

Dining Set

There are two ways to pack a dining set for your long-distance move. First, you can bring along your everyday flatware and preferably non-breakable dishes. These pieces allow you to make meals inside your hotel room without making a huge mess. While most hotels don’t have a stove or oven, you can still use the microwave and sink. But be sure you have cleaning supplies too to wash those dishes after you’re finished.

The second option is to bring disposable plates, utensils, and glasses. This way, you can discard everything after a meal and not worry about washing up. Remember that you’ll also need these items once you’re moved in. Since everything will likely be packed away, having one set of dishes out and ready to go can make a huge difference.
