Top 5 Tips to Avoid Injury and Stay Safe While Moving

You’ve packed your boxes, booked a moving van, and signed your lease. Now what?

There’s no denying that moving can be a stressful affair. You have to pack up your things and make sure that you’ve checked every box on your moving checklist.

About 1 in 9 people change residences in the U.S. every year. Many of these people go through a mistake-free move. Many others make seemingly minor mistakes that can cost them their health and safety.

Moving doesn’t just take a toll on the mind; it can take a toll on the body as well. Here are five moving safety tips to avoid injury and stay healthy. Read on to learn more.

1. Find The Right Time

Timing is everything. You need to take into account more than your financial situation and job status when marking your calendar. You also need to consider the safest time to move into your new place.

Let’s say you’re moving in the winter. That might be perfect in a city like Phoenix. But moving to a cold weather city like Minneapolis will leave you vulnerable to ice and sleet.

You should also choose the right time of day to move. Aim to avoid rush hour and heavy traffic that might cause stress and delays.

2. Get Help

There’s nothing wrong with reaching out for help. Use friends, family, or even a moving company to ensure your moving safety.

Getting help will ease the physical toll on your body and keep you safe should a mishap occur. You don’t want to be alone if you suffer from a fall or serious injury.

3. Proper Lifting

Did you know that about 80 percent of adults experience a back injury in their lifetime?

You don’t want to be another statistic. Take care of your body and exercise precaution during your move.

Make sure that all of your boxes weigh under 50 pounds. Lifting too much weight at once puts unnecessary strain on your body.

You should also use the right lifting technique when moving heavy items. Lift with your legs and not with your back. Don’t bend, twist, or pull your body when you are carrying items.

4. Prevent Falls

Falling is a part of life. But you don’t have to trip and fall during your move as long as you take extra precaution.

You can prevent falls by inspecting your home before moving day. Check areas for protruding objects and unevenness. You can also check walkways to make sure they aren’t wet or slippery.

There’s no doubt your house has a few obstacles. Be aware of these obstacles for a safe and seamless move.

5. Dress Right

You might not think about your outfit for moving day.

But dressing right is one of the easiest ways to prevent injury and ensure your safety. Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs to avoid getting cuts and scratches.

Pack up those flip-flops. You should always wear closed-toe shoes with good traction while moving.

You might also want to wear gloves or goggles depending on your moving situation.
