How to Prepare for Your Moving Company: 6 To Do’s Before the Move

Are you planning on moving but don’t know where to start? Is the idea of moving making you panic? Each year, more than 35 million Americans pick a new place to call home.

If you’re wondering how to reduce stress on moving day, this article is for you. We’ve got tips on how to create a moving schedule that won’t have you pulling your hair out. Here’s how to prepare for your moving company!

1. Downsize and Organize

In the weeks leading up to your move, check in with yourself about what you need to bring. If you’re moving to a warmer climate, do you need to keep those winter clothes? Any major move should involve some downsizing. You can always donate your excess items to a local charitable organization.

2. Gather Packing Supplies

About a month before your move, talk to your local mover and gather your packing supplies. Try to fill one box per day, and make sure to color-code or mark the boxes for your movers. Include the destination of each box for the new home. Label each side of the box and be sure to identify the boxes with fragile items.

3. Separate Your Items

Pack an essentials box as well as an important items box. The essentials box should include items you will need the first day or two in your new home. It should consist of things like medicines, toiletries, paper towels, soap and others things required to get by. The important items box should include things like personal documents, valuables, and laptops.

Keep these boxes separate from the ones your movers will load onto the truck. These two boxes should stay with you throughout the move.

4. Complete Your Packing

Have your boxes packed, labeled, and ready to go before the movers arrive. Boxes prepared before the movers’ arrival will prevent the movers from having to wait for you to complete the task. Completed packing will save you time and money.

5. Keep Your Pets and Kids Safe

Moving day is hectic, and your moving team will work quickly and efficiently if there are no obstacles in the way. This includes pets and children. Arrange for your pets and kiddos to go to a neighbors’ or relatives’ house for the day so that they are safely out of harm’s way.

6. De-Stress and Double Check

It’s a good idea to make a list of everything that has to get done on moving day. If you’re wondering how to reduce stress on moving day, you might want to reach out to your moving company.
