Goodbye House: 5 Ways to Say Farewell to Your Former Home
The average homeowner spends between 11.5 and 15 years in their home before moving on.
Are you getting ready to move to a new home? No matter how great the new home you’re moving to is, it can be hard to say farewell to the old one. You’ve made a lot of memories in that house, and you might feel a bit sad leaving it behind.
Instead of giving in to the sadness, why not do something to say, “Goodbye house!” and celebrate the time you spent there?
Read on for five ideas that will help make the transition out of your house much easier.
1. Leave Something Behind
Moving to a new home can be especially difficult for young children.
An easy way to get them comfortable with the move is to let them leave their mark. Take them to the backyard and help them carve their initials, inconspicuously, into a tree (leave yours behind, too).
You might also sit down with them and write a letter or draw a picture to leave for the new family moving into your home.
2. Take Pictures
Before you move out, go through each of the rooms in your house and take photos.
Do this while the house is still furnished, that way you can always remember how you decorated and what you liked best about it.
You can also reference the pictures when you’re setting things up in your new home.
3. Take Something with You
It’s fun to leave something behind when you’re moving to a new house.
It’s also nice to take something small with you. A good option might be something like a flower or a special stone from your backyard garden.
4. Throw a Party
A great way to say goodbye to your house is to throw a party. Some people refer to this as a “house cooling” party.
If you feel overwhelmed by the idea of throwing a party as you’re getting ready to move, remember that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good time.
You can throw a simple party with a limited budget, and your guests will still be happy to celebrate with you.
5. Commission a Painting
Taking pictures with your camera is a great way to commemorate each room in your house.
If you want something extra special, though, you might want to commission a painting of the exterior your home instead.
You can hang it in your new house, and you’ll always have a beautiful painting to look at when you’re feeling nostalgic.
Goodbye House
As you can see, there are lots of ways you can say “goodbye house!”
Moving out of your current home might be hard, especially if you’ve lived there for a long time.
If you keep these tips in mind, though, you can honor the time you spent there and move on to your new abode in style.
