First Night Tips for Your New Minneapolis Home

Are you moving into a new home in the Minneapolis, MN area but don’t know what to do on your first night there?

Your moving day will likely be exhilarating, overwhelming, and exhausting all at the same time. There will be many tasks to accomplish upon arrival.

Check out these first night tips to help you feel more relaxed and settled in your new home.

1. Unpack Your ‘Essentials’ Box

Before you pack your entire life into boxes, prepare a separate box of items you’ll need the first night and first few days after the move.

Put everyday essentials in it like pajamas, a change or two of clothes, personal hygiene products, medicine, pet items, laundry items, kitchen essentials, electronics chargers, and toys.

2. Make the Beds

Many parents wonder what to do the first night after moving when there are boxes everywhere. It’s best to make the beds for everyone in the family so you can sleep peacefully. Sometimes the other unpacking can wait until the next day, but the beds are essential to make up right away.

A pro tip is to pack a clean set of bedding into the top dresser drawer of each room, so you don’t have to rummage through your boxes to locate your sheets and blankets that first night.

If the furniture isn’t assembled, put inflatable mattresses in the rooms. This way, everyone will get a good night sleep and wake up rested the next day.

3. Order Takeout From One of the Best Places In Town

The first day in your new home is going to be hectic, and you’ll probably need to eat out or order takeout.

Our Minneapolis take out recommendations are:

  • Brasa Premium Rotisserie (best pulled-chicken and slow-roasted pork)
  • Fresh Wok (best Chinese takeout)
  • Broders’ Cucina Italiana (best Italian food)
  • World Street Kitchen (amazing burritos and Asian fusion)
  • Taqueria Los Ocampo (best tacos and Mexican food selection)
  • Punch Neapolitan Pizza (for a taste of Naples)

4. Do Something Fun

Moving is stressful, so the first night at the new home, do something fun and memorable. If you have kids, play a game together (even if it’s “I Spy” or a card game), watch a funny movie, or unpack the toys. Maybe even take some funny photos to remember that first night.

If you don’t have kids, have an impromptu romantic evening with your partner with some champagne to celebrate the new beginning. Listen to uplifting music, watch your favorite TV shows, or talk a stroll around the new neighborhood.

5. Relax and Enjoy Your New Home

Moving is a trying experience no matter your age. Try to relax the first night and not think about everything you need to do the next day.

Burn some aromatherapy candles, play soothing music, do some meditation or just spend time with your family playing games all evening. Try to get quality sleep and meet the new day with excitement for your next chapter.
