Every year, approximately 40 million Americans (that’s 14 percent of the population) move to a new home.

If you just got settled in and want to celebrate your move, an excellent way is to throw a housewarming party.

Never thrown a housewarming party before? Want to keep it as stress-free and low-key as possible?

Here are six simple tips that will help you throw a great housewarming party.

1. Wait Until You’re Settled In

You don’t need to throw a housewarming party the moment you move in.

You have a bit of time to get settled in before anyone expects you to celebrate the occasion. Hosting a housewarming party about four to six weeks after you move in is perfect timing.

2. Email Invitations

Don’t worry about mailing out invitations if you want to keep your party stress-free.

Email invites are perfectly acceptable, especially for a casual housewarming party. It’s easier to keep track of who’s RSVPed, and you don’t have to pay for postage for dozens of invitations.

3. Host an Open House

Another way to keep your party simple is to organize it as an open house. Let people know that they can drop in any time during a three-hour window.

This will keep your house from being too crowded at any one time, and you’ll have more opportunities to socialize with your guests if they’re not all showing up at the same time.

4. Invite Your New Neighbors

When you’re putting together the guest list, don’t forget to invite your new neighbors.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to get to know them better. They’ll appreciate the gesture, too.

5. Don’t Worry About Decor

Don’t worry about spending a lot of money or time on decorations for the party.

Remember, one of the purposes of a housewarming party is to show off your new place and the way you’ve decorated it.

There’s no need to overshadow your new decor with party decorations that you’re just going to discard later. Just focus on making your new house look as nice as possible.

6. Keep Food Simple

Finally, keep the food for your party simple.

You don’t need to serve a four-course meal (unless you really want to, of course). Instead, opt for finger foods and appetizers that are easy for people to serve themselves.

Remember, too, that if one of your friends offers to bring food or drinks, let them. People want to help, and accepting their offer helps to minimize your stress and allows you to enjoy the party.
