Planning a Household Move? 5 Things to Know

Forty million Americans move each year. Moving is a stressful process with a lot of different pieces to manage. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be as stressful as it may seem.

What can you do to make your household move less stressful? We’re here to help. Read on for some tips to make the process smoother.

1. Initiate the Moving Process Early

If you’re moving a short distance or from a smaller space like an apartment, it can be tempting to put off the moving planning process. The best way to reduce moving stress is to stay on top of the moving process from day one.

Start by creating a schedule. When do you have to be in your new place? When do you have to be out of the old place?

Make an appointment with your moving company to get a quote and also to find out how many boxes you’ll need for your home. Add packing milestones to your schedule. Start by packing items that are used the least, like fine china and crystal, and save the most frequently used items for last.

Finally, don’t forget to clearly label your boxes and organize them by room to make the actual moving process more organized.

2. Keep Your Clothes On Hangers

Save yourself stress and time by transporting clothes in wardrobe boxes. By doing this, you don’t have to worry about removing clothes from hangers, folding them up, and then rehanging them once you get to your new home.

If you have clothes that are out of season and unlikely to be hung up in your new space, seal them up in plastic storage tubs rather than transporting them in boxes.

3. Mind Your Floor Plan

Before your movers pull up to your new home, you should have a plan for how your new home will be laid out. Which person is going to occupy each room in the house? Where should each piece of furniture go, and in what position?

Try drawing up a layout for easy reference while you’re moving everything into your new home.

Make sure that all of your boxes are labeled. Each label should include the contents of the box plus the room to which it should arrive at the new house.

4. Overlap Your Time

If you’re moving locally, consider overlapping the time you’re in your new and old place by about a week. This will allow you time to see what’s going on in your new home and to move in delicate or valuable items like family photo albums yourself.

Overlapping time also gives you time to go in and deep clean your new house before your movers arrive as well as clean your old space before releasing possession.

Planning Your Household Move?

Planning a household move can seem overwhelming, but with a little bit of planning, the process will go off without a hitch. The best thing to do is get started early — pack neatly and efficiently, and pre-plan where you want all of your furniture to be placed in your new space.
