How to Pack for a Move: 3 Packing Tips That Make Moving Simple

Many people dread moving day. But what if things could be a whole lot easier?

If you’re not careful, moving from one home to another can waste a lot of time, money, and energy. However, knowing how to pack for a move can make things so much simpler.

Keep reading to discover three packing tips that make moving less complicated!

Room By Room

It’s vital to have a plan in place when you start packing. Try to pack up one room at a time.

This approach means you’re less likely to overlook or forget anything. And don’t forget to label the room for each box clearly, so you know where to place it in your new home!

Use the Right Boxes

When preparing for your move, gather the right supplies. Boxes are key to moving and having them packed the right way is equally as important.

Here is a guide to packing your boxes:

Small boxes (1.5 cubic feet) are ideal for books, tools, canned goods, magazines, gaming systems, DVDs and other heavy items that will fit. The good thing about small boxes is that they are hard to overload.

Medium boxes (3 cubic feet) are best for toys, photo albums, kitchen utensils, small appliances and awkwardly-shaped items like your fun collection of seasonal wreaths. Pack the heavier things on the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.

Large boxes (4.5 cubic feet) are well suited for bulkier, larger, hard-to-carry items. Group appropriate items together such as vases, larger dishes, lamps, blankets, comforters, pillows, and linens.

Wardrobe boxes (13.4 cubic feet) are tall boxes with mountable, removable metal rods so that you can transfer your hanging clothes directly from the closet to the box while still on the hangers. Fill in space within the box with other tall, awkward lighter items such as brooms, flags, tennis rackets, and vacuum cleaners.

Easy Essentials

A rookie mistake many people make is to view moving only in the long term. After all, it’s fun to fantasize about enjoying your new home once you’re unpacked.

However, don’t ignore the necessity of short-term thinking. Before you can enjoy the coming weeks and months in your new home, you’ll need to make it past the first few days.

That’s why you should pack a clear box full of things you’ll need right away. This should include essentials such as medications, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, and so on. Whatever you can’t do without in the short term should be in that box.

And that box should stay close to you as well instead of getting packed deep in the moving truck. That way, you know where all your most essential items are at all times!
