Possible Playdates: 5 Ideas for What to Do in Minneapolis with Kids

Minneapolis is a bustling city famously known as one part of the nickname, “the Twin Cities.” It’s also the birthplace of the musician Prince.

In fact, music is one of the best things about this Midwestern city. Its rich history helped it become an excellent place for families to settle.

If you’ve just moved, and you’re trying to figure out what to do in Minneapolis that’s family friendly, keep reading this guide.

1. Visit a Museum

Museums are perfect outings for children because they make education fun and exciting. Minneapolis offers many museums, including the Twin City Model Railroad Museum, the Mill City Museum, the Minnesota History Center, and the Minnesota Children’s Museum.

2. See the Outdoor Parks

Museums are great, but they’re usually indoors. When the weather permits, it’s the best time to see Minneapolis’ beautiful outdoor parks.

There are two impressive zoos in this city alone, the Como Park Zoo and the Minnesota Zoo. Como Park has the bonus of being entirely free.

Don’t forget about the Como Town Amusement Park and Carousel. Your children can find family rides, thrilling rides, and other attractions to delight them.

3. Check Out the Lakes

Minnesota is famous for its 10,000 lakes, and you can find many of them around Minneapolis. When it’s warmer outside, you can visit these areas with your family and spend some much needed time in nature, away from the busy city.

At the lakes, you can plan a barbecue or a day of swimming. You have plenty of room outdoors to let the kids run around, play, and adventure.

Minnesotans don’t let the cold weather stop them from enjoying the lakes during the winter months either. Enjoy ice fishing, pond hockey, and ice skating on one of the many frozen lakes.

4. Stop By the Mall of America

The Mall of America is known around the world as one of the largest indoor malls in the United States. It has plenty of shops and attractions to keep kids entertained for hours. It’s not likely that they can explore the entire place before getting tuckered out, making it a family event you can repeat.

Inside, you will find an amusement park, a huge LEGO store, and an entire aquarium. Just across the street, there’s an American Girl Doll store that will thrill any young girl.

5. Look Up a Sports Event

Whether your family loves hockey, basketball, baseball, football, WNBA, or even lacrosse, there is a sports event for you in Minneapolis.

Spending a day with the kids at a sports event is an excellent time for bonding over hot dogs and popcorn. You can even check out the local minor league baseball team, the St. Paul Saints, for a more affordable day.
