Planning a Smooth Move: 8 Tips for a Hassle-Free Move
Does moving have you stressed out?
A lot of this stress probably comes down to the unforeseen requirements and details of moving!
A smooth move requires planning and preparation.
Read on for eight tips to make your next move smooth and stress-free!
1. Learn Your New Space
Ask the landlord or previous owner of your new space for a layout that includes dimensions. You may find that some of the pieces that fit in your current space won’t mesh well in your new space.
2. Pare Down Your Stuff
All that stuff that won’t fit? Get rid of it!
In most cities, you’ll find nonprofits and thrift stores that will pick up bulky stuff like furniture for free.
3. Map Out Your Packing Order
A good rule of thumb is to pack decor and nonessentials first and then pack your essentials last. Your essentials include your everyday dishware, linens, and bathroom supplies.
4. Use Recycled or Creative Packing Materials
Supplement your packing material with everyday things. Use recycled newspaper, packing paper, old towels, t-shirts, and similar items from around the house to keep your belongings safe and secure in their boxes. Use blankets and pillows as padding in the boxes with fragile items.
5. Start Packing Early
Don’t plan to pack up your entire house or apartment the week before you move. Use your packing order list to guide you through early packing. For less stress come moving day, pack a box or two a day for several weeks!
(Bonus tip: don’t forget to label everything!)
6. Clean Gradually
If you’re a renter, you are most likely expected to leave your home or apartment looking fresh and clean. While you’ll want to touch everything up after you’ve packed everything and gotten it all into the truck, start early. You’d be surprised how much dust and dirt accumulate over time, and getting a headstart on it will make that final cleaning day a breeze.
7. Find the Right Moving Company
Not all moving companies are alike. Make sure that you know exactly what you’re getting when you hire a moving company and that they’re equipped to do the job you need.
For example, if you’re moving out of state, you need to make sure that your moving company offers long distance moving!
8. Know What to Pack in the Car
Don’t forget that some of your stuff is better off in your car than in the truck. This includes things like your essentials box, plants, open bottles of soap or cleaning supplies, and, of course, water and snacks!
