Questions to Ask Movers (Before You Start Packing)

Getting ready to move?

Do you have your moving company locked in and ready to go? Here are some common questions you should ask your movers before you pack that first box.

Having all the right information will help your move run smoothly!

Do I need an in-home estimate?

No matter what size your move is, it is essential to get an in-home estimate when possible. Homes vary in size and furnishings and therefore the number of boxes, labor, and truck access can all affect the cost of a move.

An estimator should visit your home or perform a virtual tour to survey the items to be moved and discuss other services you may need then provide a detailed written cost estimate.

How long does it take to move?

The time it takes to move depends on a variety of factors, including the time of year, the size of your move, the time required to pack and unload, the direction and distance you’re traveling, as well as weather conditions. Local moves usually take a day or less, while long-distance moves may require a few days in transit.

What is your licensing?

Check the licensing status of your moving company. If you are moving across state lines, the mover must be licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). If you are moving within Minnesota, your mover must be approved and authorized by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to conduct the move.

What packing options are available?

Maybe you are up to the task of packing your entire home yourself, but in the event, you are not able to, check with your moving company to see what the options are.

Some movers offer different packing services to fit a variety of moves and budgets. Some companies offer services where they pack some of your belongings or all of your household goods.

It will give you peace of mind knowing you have the option to personalize your move process with your moving company to make the transition easier.

How should I handle my appliances?

Check with your moving company for special care instruction for your appliances. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, and other mechanical or electronic appliances need special servicing to protect them during shipment. Moving parts like motors on major appliances need to be securely fastened for transport.

You will need to make sure that gas appliances are serviced and disconnected before the move. If you need assistance with your appliance preparation, ask your moving company if they provide this service for an additional fee.

Do you offer a storage option?

You may find that you need to store some or all of your belongings during the moving process. Inquire if your moving company provides this option. Check to see if they offer long and short-term storage options, the location, and if the storage option is secure and climate controlled.
