How to Pack Appliances

Appliances

Each appliance has unique needs when moving.

Are your appliances coming with you to your new home? If so, keep in mind that moving appliances often requires additional planning.

Here are some things you’ll want to understand and consider:

1)     Your responsibilities

2)     Special servicing instructions for each type of appliance

3)     Coordinating with Mayflower

4)     Understanding your mover’s limitations

Your responsibilities

Each of your appliances may require special precautions and/or servicing to prepare them for a safe move. You can count on Mayflower to do all of the heavy lifting ─ the actual transportation of your appliance from your point of origin to your destination. However, it is your responsibility to prepare your belongings ─ including major appliances ─ for safe transport.

Special servicing instructions for each type of appliance

Preparing appliances to withstand handling during transit and/or storage will help them make it to your destination in working order. For example, this might include capping off a gas line, disconnecting an icemaker or bracing a washer tub. If you are not qualified to handle these preparations yourself, it is your responsibility to hire the appropriate technician. Keep in mind, Mayflower can refer you to companies who can service your appliances for you. Be sure to ask your move coordinator if you need assistance.

Each appliance has its own unique considerations for moving preparation and handling. To read more about how to move appliances, see:

Coordinating with Mayflower

Remember, you can always ask your Mayflower move coordinator for advice. If you need help locating a qualified technician, you can request that arrangements be made on your behalf with a trusted, third-party service. If you authorize your Mayflower move coordinator to do this, it will be added to your Bill of Lading as an additional cost.

Understanding your mover’s limitations

Mayflower’s movers are no more qualified than you are to disconnect high-voltage connections or gas supplies. If you have been unable to arrange for a technician to prepare your appliances for transport on moving day, your movers will be unable to help you disconnect, service or reinstall them.

Specifically, your mover is unable to:

  • Disconnect appliances
  • Reconnect appliances
  • Disconnect utilities
  • Repair appliances
  • Remove or install window air conditioners
  • Remove or install television and radio antennas or satellite dishes
  • Perform any wiring, plumbing, electrical or carpentry services

Understanding your responsibilities and having realistic expectations about how your appliances will be moved allows you to plan accordingly and be fully prepared for moving day.
